The Call of God on Your Life

A calling from God is His predetermined intention for you. It means that you will be able to do something extraordinary, and it will be unique to you. God assigns a task, an occupation, a ministry or a responsibility. You may be the main leader or be called to serve another, but His calling is always powerful. You hear His voice, and you know what you must do and what you must become. Discovering your calling will become the passion of your life.

Mothers May Know

You may receive your calling in your youth or later in life, and it may come in a flash, or grow inside of you over time. Many mothers recognize a call of God on their children, even when the child may not know. Jesus knew he had a calling but His mother, Mary, knew when it was time to begin. We read what happened at the wedding in Cana. “Jesus‘ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come” (John 2:3-4). His hour had come and His mother knew it. In response to His mother’s words, Jesus performed a miracle and turned the water into wine. This was the first of His miraculous signs and wonders and His ministry stepped up into high gear. No one is quite like Jesus, but everyone is called to do great things for God. Discovering and fulfilling your calling is the greatest adventure you will ever experience.

The Battle for Greatness

Often, we underestimate the greatness of the children around us. Many can become distracted, however, and never reach their full potential. Sometimes we can see greatness on a child, and we know they have a powerful calling. Be careful; that child will face many spiritual battles to keep them from fulfilling their calling. The devil will do everything to distract, dilute and destroy them, to keep them from their calling. On their journey, they may need to be rescued and restored before they can fulfill their calling.

Sometimes, God may stop an individual from wandering off because of His eternal purpose for them. They will not find it easy to sidestep or run away from Him. This happens when parents and grandparents have prayed for their child to be blessed and used of God. The Lord honors those parents and blesses their children with a special calling. Then, He guards that child, protects them and orchestrates the details of their lives so they are able to fulfill their calling.

I have even seen young people leave the church and wander into sin. To my surprise, they later show up at my door with a friend. They told their friend that they needed God to help them with their problem. Then they bring their friend to me for counsel and prayer. They left their Christian upbringing but never stopped believing and found themselves preaching to their friends. America is full of those who have forsaken the Lord, but He has not forsaken them, and they know the way to life.

My Conversion

Our conversion to Christ is often the first part of our calling. I remember vividly what happened to me; it was the day my life turned around. I repented of my sins and gave everything to God, and soon I was walking in the call of God for my life. I was fourteen years old, and I had rejected God. I was visiting a friend in another city. My friend was a believer, and although I had been raised in the church, I did not believe. The events of my visit brought the issue of salvation to the forefront. Before long, I found myself talking to God. I did not know what to think. If God was real, I would be crazy to

resist Him. On the other hand, if He was a fable, I did not want to live a life of pretend. I knew I had to get serious. I decided to give my life to God, for one week. If He proved Himself to me, beyond my feelings and emotions before the week was over, then I would commit the rest of my life to Him.

I said a sinner's prayer; I thanked Jesus for dying for me on the cross. I asked Him to forgive me of my sins and come into my life. Immediately, I felt the presence of God change me.. The world around me became bright and the colors were so vivid. I had never seen the world like this before. I felt clean and whole for the very first time. I felt peace and joy inside of me. Later, however, I said, "God, this is the best day of my life. Please forgive me for any doubt, but I have to know this was not just an emotional experience. Somehow, during the next seven days I ask you to prove to me that you are real."

As the week progressed, I was chided by my older brother and sister, Andrew and Grace. They began to make fun of me. I could not talk to them, so I prayed for them. On the seventh day of my conversion, I asked God to prove Himself to me by saving Andrew and Grace before the day ended. I said, "God, I know you will not force them, but you can pull them so hard that they will not be able to refuse."

During the Sunday morning service nothing happened to my brother and sister. I spent the day in prayer and fasting. The evening service came and we had a guest speaker at the church. After the preacher delivered his sermon, he asked who would like to give their lives to God. No one shifted, so he sat down and my father, who was the pastor, stood up to close the service. I kept praying. Suddenly, the guest speaker rose from his seat and apologetically, asked if he could speak again. He gave another impassioned altar call, but again, no one responded. He sat down and my father stood to close the meeting, and I kept praying. This happened seven times! By the fifth time, the power of God became so evident that people began to weep all over the auditorium. I was crying and I prayed like there was no tomorrow. When I opened my eyes, there was Andrew and Grace on their knees at the front of the church. They were weeping and their hands were lifted in the air. They had given their lives to God. God had proved to me that He was real. That night, I prayed and dedicated everything to Jesus. I have followed the Lord since then, and now I have seen thousands of people come to the Lord.

Soon after my conversion, I asked the Lord what He wanted me to be. He told me I was to be a preacher. I entered the call of God for my life. I have now preached continuously for 55 years. Ask the Lord what He wants you to do. Serve Him with all of your heart and in time, you will discover your amazing calling.
